What are we looking for in a member?

Attitude: Your attitude may be the most important factor in your success as a member of Revolution.

Time: We understand that conflicts arise and those are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. However, you need to have the ability to attend most winter/spring rehearsals and all of the summer performances. You also need to be available to move in with the corps in June.

Finances: Tour Fees, camp fees, and registration fees need to be considered. Do you have the ability to pay for your fees (or find ways in which you can)?

Age: You may audition for Revolution if you are between the age of 14 and 21. You are allowed to march with the corps if you turn 22 on or after June 1, 2006.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

    Camp questions:

Q: What do I need to bring to camp?

A: Everyone should bring comfortable clothing and toiletries, enough for two days.  There will be souvenirs available for purchase on Sunday, so in addition to your camp fee ($35) which pays for food and housing and the one-time, non-refundable registration fee ($75), you may wish to bring some extra spending money. Note: The registration fee and camp fee are used to cover the clinic and possible membership into the Drum & Bugle Corps.

Brass players: Bring your own mouthpiece for rehearsal, and your horn if possible.

Percussionists: Bring sticks and mallets, and your drum if you so choose (to ensure everyone has an instrument).

Guard: Bring a practice flag (6'). Rifles or sabers, bring your own (39") weapon of choice.

Q: Where do I find out more about the camps?

A: To learn more about the upcoming camp schedule, click HERE.

    Financial obligation:

Standard tour fees will be $995 for the 2007 season. You will be able to make payment arrangements with the Business Manager, Mike Quigley at (m.quigley@revolutionypa.org).

Members will also need to participate in six (6) fundraiser events to complete their membership requirements. This can be done through Revolution Youth in Performing Arts (YPA) sponsored fundraisers (such as Spurs games in San Antonio, music concerts in Austin, or baseball games in Houston). If the member is unable to work YPA-sponsored fundraisers, they may be able to "create-their-own" fundraiser to help "buy out" their fundraiser event commitment.

To read more about these fundraisers, visit our Chat/Discussion Forum.

NOTE: Financial concerns should not keep you from participating. You will also be able to reduce your corps fees by camp attendance, sponsorships, fundraising volunteer hours, or by scholarship. Also, veteran members of Revolution will receive a $50 discount for each year marched.

If all obligations are met and you get really involved in working fundraiser events, your full corps fees could be reduced to as low as $450 dollars.

If you would like further information regarding dues and discounts please contact us (email: m.quigley@revolutionypa.org), the corps hall (phone:
210-320-1276) or refer to the member handbook.

Q: What do the fees cover?

A: The tour fee covers nearly all costs associated with the tour during the summer. This includes room and board, all meals (except for 4 or 5 free nights), nearly 13,000 miles of travel, and many hours of quality instruction while on tour.

Revolution will provide members all meals except on "free days" which typically happen every 7 to 10 days on tour. On free days, members have the option of going to a mall or do something that you can only do in the area (i.e. sightsee in New York city).

Members will also pay for their own laundry (usually $5-$15 per visit, with one visit every two weeks) and occasional runs to Wal-Mart to pick up incidentals. The amount of extra money required for these sorts of things varies from person to person. A good rule of thumb is anywhere between $150 and $350.

Q: Are there opportunities for me to earn money towards my financial obligations?

A: YES!  The corps offers several fundraiser opportunities and provides all necessary sponsorship materials for the member to work.  However, the member is the one who ultimately puts forth the effort to raise the funds.  Also, there may be a limited number of scholarships available to the corps membership and are granted like any other scholarship (based on financial need and application).

If you feel you may have difficulty meeting your financial obligations to the corps, please speak with a member of the administrative staff.  The corps can only help you if we know of your situation.  We want to help you!

    Audition questions:

Q: Do I need to sign up beforehand?  Do I need to mail anything in?

A: No advance forms are required -- show up at camp with your forms; membership application, medical release, and responsibility agreement. For your convenience, the registration forms is available on this website (top of this page).  We will also have these forms available for you at registration at camp.

Q: What do I have to do at audition?

A: First, show that you have a desire to be a part of the Revolution.  Secondly, the staff will assess your ability (in a relatively relaxed audition) and give you something to work on.  Between camps, if you show that you can improve and display a sincere desire to perform well, you are the type of person we want!

Q: What do I need to prepare for the audition?

A: Prepared pieces are encouraged but are not required.  Horn line, battery, and pit may be required to sight read selections from the show music, perform exercises from rehearsal, and play previously rehearsed portions of the show music.

Suggestions to brass players: Practice lip slurs, articulation, and range exercises prior to camp.

Percussion: Work on your basic rudiments and common exercises prior to camp.

Guard: Work on basic movement fundamentals and increasing flexibility are good things to do prior to coming to camp.

Q: Do you accept video-taped auditions?

A: Yes, if you are unable to attend an audition camp, it is possible to submit a video.

Please note: Although a videotape can help show your skills, placement in Revolution can only be accomplished by an actual audition in front of the staff. You may send in a videotape, but you will not be offered a position solely based on the videotape alone (also, videotapes will not be returned). Based on your videotape audition, we may request you to attend the next camp to audition in person.

Part of the audition process is making sure that you are committed to being a part of Revolution. We understand the cost of traveling to camps, but many members travel across the state of Texas and all over the country to march here. Therefore, our audition process must be fair to everyone. Attending camps is crucial to your membership.

By attending a camp, you will also become familiar with Revolution. This can also help you decide for yourself if this is something you want to do. Commitment, dedication, work ethic, and attitude doesn't always show up in a video. Those qualities would best be shown in person.

    Requirements are as follows:

    Length: 10 minutes.

Format: NTSC VHS videotape, (NTSC is the standard North American videotape format).

Contents: Varies by section, but similar to the material you would be expected to perform in a live audition:

Brass: Demonstrate basic proficiency with several scales, show range, articulation, play a solo piece.

Percussion: Demonstrate proficiency with percussion basic fundamentals, various techniques and a solo piece.

Guard: Demonstrate basics, drop spins, dance.

Remember: This is a very short amount of time to show off as many skills as you can; however we don't expect a flawless performance. Don't spend a lot of time making your video. Introduce yourself, tell us where you are from, do your audition and your best. If you have any questions, email: m.quigley@revolutionypa.org. Good Luck!

Q: Can I audition for drum major my first year in the >corps?

A: Yes.  We will be auditioning interested parties for the position of drum major and/or sideline conductor for the 2007 season.

Q: I marched for Revolution in the past, do I need to audition to march again this year?

A: Yes.  We will be auditioning for all positions in the drum corps, including those positions held by members last year.

    Time-commitment questions:

Q: Can I join Revolution if I'm in my high school or college band?  What if I my school starts in early August?

A: Yes, but check your schedule with your band director.  If your band camp is in early August, it may conflict with DCI Championships and if you're "signed on" with Revolution we won't be able to spare you during that Finals Week.  Thus, you may need to arrive late at your school band camp.  Again, check with your band director to clear any schedule conflicts.

Also, if you need to miss any Revolution camps or arrive late to "move-in" due to performances, graduation commitments, or other school-related activities, it will most likely be no problem.  However, please contact a member of the administrative staff to work out any schedule conflicts as early as possible!

    Other questions:

Q: What instruments are in the corps?

    A:

    Brass:

All "bugles" are bell-front, three-valve any key brass instruments.  All music is written in your normal clef.

    • Trumpet (Bb): The highest brass voice.

    • Mellophone (F): The alto voice.

    • Baritone (Bb): The tenor voice. Trombonists usually play baritone.

    • Euphonium: Larger and darker-sounding than the baritone, and plays the lower tenor voicing.

    • Contra bass Tuba: The bass voice, Hefted on the left shoulder to play.

    Percussion:
The Battery (or marching percussion) consists of snares, tenors, and bass drums.  The Pit (or front ensemble) generally consists of, but is not limited to: wooden keyboards (xylophones, marimba), metallic keyboards (vibraphones, bells, crotales), timpani, Afro-Cuban drums (congas, timbales), cymbals, gongs, custom-made wind chimes and various concert percussion instruments.

    Guard:
Revolution guard will audition males and females. The guard utilizes flags, rifles, sabers, and dance in their routines.

Q: Can my parents get involved?

A: Absolutely!  Revolution has a volunteer organization very similar to a band booster organization.  Volunteers are needed during the winter and spring camps to prepare meals, service vehicles, sew uniforms, repair instruments, etc.  These volunteers also help with cooking, driving, travel arrangements, sewing, uniforms, and other sundry needs during the summer national tour.  Revolution tours with anywhere from 10-20 volunteers.
